Titus
I don’t know what’s gotten into Taryn, but she’s been quiet all day. I know her mother’s never been the warmest of women but I’m truly in the dark here. Still, I can’t complain. She’s been with Ty and me all day, from the park to the drive-in burger joint where the little guy tuckered out in the backseat. His gentle snores fill the car as the sun sets and I drive both of them back to their house.
Taryn reaches for her seatbelt when I pull up front. “Do you want me to grab him?” I ask, staring back at his angelic sleeping face.
“Could you?”
“Of course.” I put the truck in park, and to my surprise she places her hand on mine while it’s still on the gearshift.
“Can you stay a while, too? I could really use a drink.” Her eyelashes bat against her high cheekbones. “And I hate drinking alone.”
My heart expands. There’s nothing I want more. “Sure thing.” I turn the car off, head around to the backseat and scoop up little Ty. I close my eyes and breathe in the unmistakable smell of a little kid who’s spent the day outdoors.
My little kid, I remind myself.
Taryn opens the front door, holds it wide. “His room is upstairs, second door on the right.” I nod, the stairs squeaking under my sneakers as I make my way up. The darkness of the house closes around me, an oddly familiar feeling. Sometimes, I believe, familiarity presents itself in situations where you want it to be. There’s nothing I’d want more than to be with Taryn and Ty. To take care of them, prove to them—to her— that I’ll never leave again. My days as a daredevil are over. I’ve wasted too much time already.
Taryn wiggles in front of us, her body pressing up against me as she passes, and opens Ty’s bedroom door. She turns on the nightlight and I lay him on his bed. She wiggles him out of his shoes and clothes and into his pajamas, his eyes remaining closed the whole time. I watch them as my shoulder rests against the doorframe.
She’s so beautiful. Stray strands of red hair loose from her braid frames her full face. Her white shirt has a little boy’s tennis shoe tread near the collar. Probably from when Ty decided to walk up the front of her, and show me how he flips. The way her eyes lit up when she looked at him, smile beaming for all to see, she was meant to be a mother. And a damn good one at that.
She tucks Ty in and presses her finger to her full lips as she tiptoes out of the room, motioning for me to do the same. The door closes with a click, and for the first time it’s just the two of us. We stare at each other for a minute. She presses her back against Ty’s door, smoothing down her flyaways.
“Well,” she says stretching her neck. “How about that drink?” She doesn’t wait for my answer.
